This British biographical drama is set in the late 1840s and tells the story of Euphemia Gray, also known as Effie Gray, and her marriage. She came from Scotland and was just nineteen years old when she married John Ruskin, a British art critic. However, restrictive rules confined her, leaving her feeling isolated within her own home—a situation that threatened their marriage. The film’s resolution hinges on whether they can overcome this challenge. I remember seeing Dakota Fanning in teen movies not long ago, but now she's appearing in something more mature. It was initially difficult to accept her in this role, though I eventually came to appreciate her performance. That isn't to say it was a remarkable portrayal; it felt somewhat believable, largely because the story itself is straightforward—it would be unremarkable if it took place today. However, for that era, dealing with such a situation publicly and protecting family honor was a significant matter. The film’s settings and locations were well-chosen. As is typical of period dramas, the costumes are excellent. It's always enjoyable to learn about history through movies rather than schoolbooks. Beyond that, it felt fairly ordinary, just slightly above average. The pacing was slow and the movie a bit too long, so it’s unlikely to be a commercial success. I could see why many people wouldn’t want to pay to see it in theaters. In my view, it would have been better suited as a television film, perhaps divided into three or four episodes. It's not for everyone, but those who enjoy slower-paced stories might find it worthwhile. 6/10
