I suspect this opinion will likely be met with disagreement, but as far as I'm concerned, baseball isn’t a particularly engaging pastime – and movies centered around baseball are even less so (with the occasional exception like “The Natural” (1984), “A League of Their Own” (1992) and “42” (2013)). And that sentiment, in my estimation, is entirely relevant to this truly awful first film from writer-director Carson Lund. This so-called comedy follows two men’s amateur baseball teams in a small Massachusetts town as they play what's supposed to be the final game at a local ballpark slated for demolition to build a new school. The unbelievably lengthy contest, triggered by a series of completely unfunny events that prolong the duration of the match, stretches from midday through the afternoon and into a cool fall evening where the players attempt to keep playing in the darkness (and that’s supposed to be funny, apparently). There are also several drawn-out, uninteresting conversations between the players in the dugout, along with shots of spectators on the sidelines who offer their commentary about what's happening on the field. These scenes don’t contribute anything meaningful and only serve to lengthen an already-dull story. The disappointing thing is that the basic idea could have resulted in a pleasant and enjoyable film. Sadly, though, the lifeless dialogue, weak plot points and underdeveloped characters stop that from happening. While I will concede that this production does showcase some striking camerawork and thoughtful set design, there’s not much else to praise. That is, of course, unless you want to acknowledge the filmmakers' appropriate choice of title: An “eephus,” for those unfamiliar with the term, is a rare type of curveball thrown very slowly, almost putting the batter in a state of hypnotic inaction, like they're falling asleep. And on that front, the filmmaker has certainly succeeded in creating a film that lives up to its name regarding audience reaction. I’m just thankful I didn’t spend money at a movie theater to see this.
