There’s no denying that this crime drama lacks originality, yet it doesn’t come off as poorly made. The story centers on an energetic young journalist named Pollack, portrayed by Justin Timberlake, who finds himself at odds with his boss, Ashford, played by Morgan Freeman, due to a flawed article concerning a man's conviction—a conviction that Pollack questions. He becomes certain that something isn’t right and decides to look into the matter. This decision puts him in harm's way, as he and his girlfriend are attacked and rescued only by Deed, portrayed by LL Cool J, who is revealed to be part of a unique police unit known as FRAT—a group seemingly operating outside established protocols. As Ashford begins to share his reporter’s concerns, the situation escalates into something more perilous for nearly everyone involved. For reasons that aren't clear, director David J. Burke reveals most of the plot details early on, which significantly diminishes any sense of suspense as the story progresses. Timberlake looks presentable, Kevin Spacey delivers a serviceable performance as an investigator examining other investigators, and Freeman gestures with scotch, perhaps to ease the feeling of inevitability that permeates the film. While it's technically well-crafted, and the script isn’t terrible, it feels more like a test—an attempt to gauge audience reaction to Timberlake without nudity. Ultimately, it is instantly forgettable, unfortunately.
