It’s hard to think of a better demonstration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s Olympic ideals than what's shown with this ski jumper. As British viewers, we already face an uphill battle at the Winter Olympics, so it seems particularly strange that this somewhat awkward, glasses-wearing young man chose ski jumping. You could almost sympathize with his dad, Keith Allen, who seemed doubtful about the whole thing. But he wasn’t going to be discouraged, and so he went somewhere snowy—Garmisch—and fortunately made friends with a local hotel owner who allowed him to work in exchange for room and board. He readily admits that he's not very good at it – only just managing to stay upright after jumps of less than 35 meters, but an unexpected meeting with Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman) becomes the most improbable way for his skills to improve and eventually qualify for the Calgary Olympics in 1988. I recall how much attention there was on his daring feats as the celebrated Matti Nykänen (Edvin Endre) routinely jumped twice as far, but Eddie kept going anyway. It truly felt like it was about participating rather than winning, and Taron Egerton really brings a sense of determination—mixed with just a touch of oddness—to his character that creates a comedic drama that I believe is uniquely British. The disapproving officials at the BOA are perfectly portrayed by Mark Benton; there’s a subtle suggestion of romance, and a sauna scene that probably only Rune Temte could have realistically performed. Like the man himself, it takes a little while to get started, but once it finds its rhythm, it's an enjoyably paced and funny story about someone who managed to win over the country even though getting a medal was never really a possibility.
