I wasn’t initially drawn to Easy A when I first saw the trailer; it seemed like just another high school comedy. However, I decided to give it a chance—mostly out of curiosity—and ended up being pleasantly surprised! It was interesting because only two days prior, I'd seen Emma Stone in Zombieland and thought she seemed pretty cool. That didn’t really explain why her face seems to be everywhere now, though. After watching Easy A, it all became clear: this girl is genuinely fun. She possesses a remarkable talent for dry, sarcastic comedy and has impeccable timing. And that husky voice of hers is something else! Easy A centers on Olive, an academically successful student with a spotless reputation, who tells a small lie to her best friend about supposedly losing her virginity to someone who doesn't exist. Things quickly spiral out of control when this story spreads rapidly and she suddenly finds herself branded as promiscuous. (The plot does require some willingness to overlook the fact that it’s hard to believe high school students would be so shocked by a peer having sex, but let's go with it.) As with any rumor, the details change depending on who you ask, and before Olive knows what's happening, everyone in school believes she’s slept with every guy around. The twist comes when she realizes she can use this reputation to her advantage—and she does, having unpopular guys pay her to pretend she’s had encounters with them. Predictably, things escalate, and she needs to find a way to set everything right again. The film could have easily been silly, but the screenplay is exceptionally well-written. It pays homage to classic 1980s teen movies, including those by John Hughes, and incorporates references to The Scarlet Letter and Sylvia Plath. The dialogue is sharp and amusing, and the characters feel like relatable people rather than tired stereotypes. Stanley Tucci shines as Olive’s dad, bringing the same dry sense of humor that his on-screen daughter displays. Patricia Clarkson proves to be a wonderfully funny actress in her role as well. Every performer is perfectly suited for their part. One of the film's funniest aspects involves a group of Christian students—the “Jesus freaks.” Marianne, played by Amanda Bynes, leads this group and constantly lectures Olive about her "inappropriate" behavior. The conversations between them are consistently hilarious. For example: Marianne: "There’s a higher power that will judge you for your indecency." Olive: "Tom Cruise?" Overall, Easy A is more of a film that elicits chuckles than outright laughter, although it does have some genuinely funny moments. Those chuckles come frequently. I would certainly suggest watching Easy A if you’re looking for a clever and insightful comedy about an intelligent and spirited girl who takes charge of her own life and shows everyone who thinks they can judge her a thing or two.
