Hardy Manor! Among the silent films made by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, this is not one of their strongest entries. Emmett Flynn directed Early to Bed, with cinematography by George Stevens. It’s become generally accepted that this is a film among their works that isn't quite right. It’s less about a lack of jokes than it is about the shift toward a darker tone that doesn’t really work. The story involves Ollie receiving some money, which changes his personality entirely. He then employs Stan as his butler and begins to treat him poorly. But Stan has his limits... The most enjoyable parts are several scenes centered around the garden's water fountain, and the resulting chaos when Stan retaliates with a wild outburst. These moments are enhanced by cheerful music and good sound effects; a clever dog is also present and unaffected by the film’s unusual atmosphere. It isn't necessary viewing and will mainly appeal to those who want to see everything from Stan and Ollie. 5/10
