Aliens arrive with the intention of gathering botanical specimens. Startled by humans, bright lights, and curious dogs, they quickly depart—though not before one of them, a young alien, is left behind. He finds shelter in a local family’s storage building and is subsequently found by a boy named "Elliott" (Henry Thomas). A unique connection develops between the two. The rest of Elliott's family then appears, and they attempt to figure out how to return the alien home. Will they manage this before the authorities become aware? It remains one of those films that feels genuinely enduring across time. It’s a story about affection, a science fiction journey, an account of familial ties, yearning, and faithfulness—all accompanied by John Williams' exceptional musical score. The bicycle pursuit is now considered iconic in film history, as is the “phone home” scene and the image of the small alien dressed up. The performances from the child actors are very good; Drew Barrymore ("Gertie") and Robert MacNaughton as their older brother ("Michael") both add to a heartwarming narrative that even after 40 years continues to be among the finest cinema has produced.
