The film feels rather convoluted, focusing on the experiences of ex-CIA agent Claire (played by Julia Roberts) and her former MI6 colleague Ray (Clive Owen), who had a short-lived romantic encounter five years prior that left him embarrassed. Now working in the private sector, he unexpectedly runs into her at Grand Central station while conducting business, revealing they're both involved in industrial espionage. Anticipating an important announcement, they decide to steal some information and obtain $35 million. Despite a developing attraction, their lack of trust is apparent—a feeling shared by the audience, and one I couldn’t shake either. Roberts puts effort into her performance, but Owen seems primarily present for visual appeal, offering little beyond that. Tom Wilkinson adopts an unnecessary American accent as the person in charge of the valuable formula, while Paul Giamatti makes brief appearances as someone intent on stealing it. Once the basic plot is established, however, the narrative begins to repeat itself, and for roughly two hours, we seem to circle back to familiar territory.
