The film initially shows promise, offering a brief look at a British soldier who seemed as ill-equipped for the conflict as the nation itself. This opening feels like an intriguing preview... ...followed by a segment detailing how ordinary people participated in the evacuation... ...and all of this suggested it could be Britain's equivalent to "Saving Private Ryan." However, what ultimately emerges is more akin to Michael Bay’s style than Steven Spielberg’s. It appears polished and technically competent, but it struggles with a compelling narrative. Spielberg was able to craft a story that simultaneously championed the soldiers while criticizing the war itself, which made the entire sequence on Normandy Beach engaging from beginning to end. "Dunkirk," however, loses its way roughly fifteen minutes in, shifting its focus solely to action sequences and treating the plot as secondary. Essentially, it's dull.
