I first experienced this movie back in 2000, and I honestly struggled to understand how an Academy Award winner like Jeremy Irons ("Profion") ended up participating in something so ridiculous. The story revolves around his ambition to overthrow the Empress (played with surprising stiffness by Thora Birch) and steal the sceptre that governs the white dragons. She resists him, forcing him to search for the red "Rod of Savina," which controls the red dragons, through his intimidating lieutenant "Damodar" (Bruce Payne). Simultaneously, minor criminals "Ridley" (Justin Whalin) and his friend "Snails" (Marlon Wayans) become tangled in this mess after a trip to the House of Magic goes wrong. This sets up some goofy action sequences featuring rudimentary special effects, an odd appearance from Richard O'Brien (reflecting on his work in "Adventure Game"), and generally, you can guess where it’s going. It’s not good, but I didn’t despise it either. There are moments of amusement to be found; Whalin is pleasant enough to look at, and the movie clearly isn't taking itself seriously, making it difficult to truly dislike—particularly during the final scene when Irons fully embraces over-the-top acting and all the dragons soar into the air. The script is silly, but somehow that didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Despite my reservations, I ended up liking this film....
