There were aspects of this film that I found pleasurable. However, my memory suggests I also liked the book it's adapted from—though that was quite some time ago. Because I can’t recall specifics about the novel now, I'm unsure whether my negative feelings stem from issues with the script or shortcomings in the original story. I can quickly outline what didn't work for me, and I should warn you that these points might reveal plot elements. I felt it took too long to see the spice worms, and when we finally did, they were just depicted as holes in the ground—not particularly impressive. It also bothered me that most of the likable characters were eliminated rapidly, leaving only Paul and his mother alive (which is a significant reveal, I suppose). Furthermore, I found it strange that during the major battle sequence there were advanced bombs and sophisticated missiles, but on the ground combat consisted solely of well-executed knife and sword fights. Couldn't the people who created those missiles have also devised a simple pistol? Or am I being overly critical?
