I’ve had thoughts about earlier adaptations—not just the initial movie of this current set of films, but the very first attempt to translate the novels into film format. Considering how well everything flowed and the rhythm of events, I think that previous version handled things better than this one does. It seems like they're aiming for a grand, expansive narrative here, yet it ends up feeling surprisingly ordinary. The visuals are impressive, and so are the computer-generated effects, but the story moves slowly, and incidents occur that don’t quite connect or create a sense of contributing significantly to what’s happening overall. The performances are adequate, though not particularly memorable; I suspect this is due, at least in part, to a shallowness in how the characters are portrayed. I realize this assessment might not be widely embraced or align with common opinions, but it seems they're attempting an ambitious scope and, as a result, accomplishing very little. Ultimately, it’s striking to look at, but it misses some essential spark and substance. It feels somewhat detached from its surroundings and occasionally repetitive, if that’s clear. If you enjoyed the books, it might still be worth seeing.
