Drowning Mona proved to be an entertaining experience; watching it was genuinely enjoyable. It’s a funny and clever film, and I especially appreciated how flashbacks were used—particularly the unreliable perspective they created. The characters all have distinct personalities, which is a definite plus. I'm drawn to this kind of humor – dry and understated – and it really suits my taste. The music also works well, notably at the end with selections like "Popcorn" and "Papa’s Got a Brand New Pigbag." The film moves along nicely too, given its length of 90 minutes. The acting is excellent across the board; everyone in the cast delivers strong performances. Danny DeVito seems more relaxed than I'm accustomed to seeing him, and while I'm not certain it’s entirely my preference, his subdued demeanor fits because each character has their own quirks, so I didn't dwell on it too much. Casey Affleck's portrayal of Bobby is effective; that word certainly applies to his performance, although I wonder if that trim is real... or a wig? William Fichtner, Marcus Thomas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Neve Campbell and Bette Midler are all solid in their roles. Will Ferrell and Melissa McCarthy also make appearances. This feels like something of an overlooked treasure, which is surprising considering the cast involved. It seems I might be among a smaller group who really liked it; generally, opinions appear to suggest it’s at least acceptable. Regardless, I would recommend it.
