Violet Fahy hasn't been on a date in years; her husband’s passing left her raising their young son, Toby Robinson, alone. She’s finally agreed to go out, having been persuaded by her sister Jen Beane to ditch the idea of wearing a deckchair and head to a rooftop restaurant to meet Henry Sklenar, an online acquaintance she finds attractive. Unfortunately, things quickly take a turn for the worse when she receives suspicious text messages and discovers an intruder in her house through her home security system – someone who isn’t delivering chocolates. As the evening progresses, she's given instructions that involve eliminating both her date and some incriminating evidence, but the identity of the person behind it all remains unclear, as does her ability to stop them before they harm her son, sister, or Henry. The plot is quite unbelievable, yet there's a surprising level of suspense as Violet and the audience attempt to figure out what’s happening in this strange environment with its restaurant furnishings. It feels like “Cluedo,” leaving you wondering if it could be any of the people present – the waiter, bartender, pianist, solitary diner, or even her date himself. What is the hidden truth? The film reveals bits and pieces of backstory that gradually become more relevant, and while the conclusion isn’t entirely satisfying, the drama moves along at a good pace, has some awkward moments, and manages to entertain for ninety minutes, all while teaching me something about eating panna cotta at a high elevation.
