It’s not exactly groundbreaking cinema, but it does offer something unusual. As with most films I watch, being an A24 release, I went in knowing absolutely nothing about it. After forming my own opinion, I looked into the details and discovered it's a dark comedy from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli, produced by Cage and Ari Aster. That certainly piqued my interest—the director has only directed three films so far, and his most recent one, "Sick of Myself" (2022), explores cancel culture in a surreal style with what might be a playful reference to France. The story centers on a regular biology professor who begins appearing in the dreams of countless people, quickly becoming infamous as a source of nightmares and subsequently facing societal backlash. Nicolas Cage delivers a strong performance as Paul Matthews, the college professor, alongside Julianne Nicholson as his wife, Janet. Michael Cera also appears in a smaller role. The cinematography by Benjamin Loeb ("Mandy," 2018, "Pieces of a Woman," 2020, "After Yang," 2020) is quite striking, particularly the camera angles used. The soundtrack is fittingly understated, with no music present except for the closing credits song, “City Of Dreams” by Talking Heads. However, what truly stands out about this movie—beyond its subject matter and plot—is another solid performance from Nicolas Cage. It's a welcome development. I’d rate it around 7.5 out of 10 or a B+, but it’s probably not for everyone; those who appreciate Northern European cinematography will likely enjoy it more. The narrative feels familiar, I’m sure you’ve encountered similar stories before.
