The life of college professor "Matthews" (Nicolas Cage) spirals out of control when he begins appearing in the dreams of other people, including his wife. At first, these appearances are minor and seemingly insignificant. However, things take a turn after an encounter with someone who has been experiencing something more intense. This meeting doesn't go well—in several ways—and it seems to alter the nature of these dream occurrences for everyone involved, transforming them into nightmares. A fairly standard, occasionally violent reaction follows, making life extremely difficult for Matthews and his family. The situation is made worse as his newfound notoriety comes back to haunt him. I found myself enjoying the initial thirty minutes of this unusual and well-written drama; Cage seems comfortable poking fun at himself, and he appears to be having a good time early on. But once the narrative shifts toward darker territory, it loses its momentum. The film's appeal and originality get lost within what feels like an obvious commentary on "cancel culture" prevalent among social media users. It isn’t groundbreaking to explore the difference between reality and perception—especially when those distinctions are clear—and I eventually felt that the movie lacked a sense of how to finish without reinforcing its own rather gloomy message. The premise is intriguing, and the execution is adequate, but ultimately, the final result feels disappointing.
