It’s disappointing that the movie strayed so much from its literary origins. "Nathan," portrayed by Stephan Bender, arrives at an isolated American school in a deeply religious area and develops feelings for "Roy" (Max Roeg), who's just a bit older and drives the bus. A secret romance begins between them. But as time passes, their intense connection gets overshadowed by concerns about whether they can maintain it, creating an atmosphere of anxiety and apprehension regarding discovery—culminating in a disturbing final scene that differs from how Jim Grimsley resolved the story in the book. Despite this, the two lead actors deliver compelling and sympathetic performances, and considering the film’s limited resources, it's a respectable production.
