Vincent Price delivers an outstanding performance in this dark romantic story, which shares similarities with Hitchcock’s "Rebecca." Gene Tierney ("Miranda") is raised within a strict religious household and taken under the wing of the fervent "Ephraim" (Walter Huston) when her cousin, "Nicholas van Ryn" (Price), presents her with an unexpected opportunity: to live in his grand estate, "Dragonwyck," and assist in caring for his wife. Following his wife’s death, "Miranda" returns home, only to find that she is being pursued by her former host, who proposes marriage. The ensuing events form a compelling thriller—though perhaps moving at a somewhat deliberate speed—where it becomes clear that there's considerably more to "van Ryn" than what first appears. His arrogance and sense of entitlement are evident not only in his treatment of his new wife but also in how he interacts with almost everyone around him, leading the viewer to anticipate his downfall. Arthur Miller’s photography skillfully portrays the film’s Gothic atmosphere; light, darkness, and shadow contribute significantly to the unfolding narrative alongside Joseph L.
