Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero delivers on what most viewers expect from this series—exciting action, fresh transformations, and the familiar humor of Akira Toriyama, which is well-integrated into the film. The decision to center the story around Gohan, Piccolo, and Pan proved worthwhile because of the more personal feel, although it doesn’t quite reach the scale or overall satisfaction found in the previous movie. There's an excess of elements clearly intended for fans that result in new forms feeling silly and unwarranted. The flow and equilibrium among the various plot threads and character interactions could have been handled better. While some fight scenes are enjoyable, jarring edits diminish their impact. Furthermore, the use of 3D animation represents a noticeable step down from the quality seen in more recent productions. It’s an agreeable, uncomplicated, and entertaining experience, but ultimately leaves one wanting more. Rating: B-
