This is the third official Dragon Ball film following “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods” and “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’.” Unless you've been keeping up with the anime, this movie isn’t really for you—just a heads up. I can’t even begin to describe what Dragon Ball means to me; it’s truly impossible to put into words how excited I was before seeing the film. Yesterday marked my first time watching my favorite anime on the big screen, and it was incredible! Finally, I saw a movie I'd been looking forward to, and I actually enjoyed it. For so long, I’d built up expectations for movies I really wanted to love, only to be disappointed afterward. Broly delivers everything I hoped for and more. However, I need to warn you: this animated film isn’t meant for casual moviegoers! If you stopped following Dragon Ball after “Z” or aren't familiar with the series at all, you'll likely feel lost. You won’t recognize certain characters, you won’t understand why some people are still alive, and you’ll have no idea how much stronger our heroes have become. This is for the fans. I’ve noticed critics tearing this film apart, and they often start their reviews by saying “I’ve never seen the anime.” Why would you watch a movie that clearly builds upon the anime's story and then review it? It’s like watching "Avengers: Endgame" without having seen any of the previous 21 installments—it just doesn’t make sense. So, assuming I am writing for Dragon Ball fans… This is the best Dragon Ball film ever, hands down. Yes, the track record wasn't great to begin with, and most of the movies released aren’t even part of the main storyline. Still, “Battle of Gods” and “Resurrection ‘F’” were pretty good, especially the first one. “Broly” easily surpasses those two in nearly every way. Of course, I need to be fair to those earlier films. "Dragon Ball Super" revitalized the anime and brought it back into popularity, so naturally, “Broly” had a lot of advantages because the studio gave them everything they needed for the movie to succeed. When the first two films came out, "Super" didn’t exist yet. Basically, those earlier movies were trying to revive Dragon Ball, while “Broly” is about keeping it alive and showing its continued potential. Thankfully, things worked out perfectly. The box office numbers are astounding, which will likely guarantee the continuation of “Super”—I'm eagerly awaiting news of a series renewal—and the film itself is truly astonishing. The animation quality is absolutely breathtaking. You know when you go to see a movie with friends and something so amazing happens that you just look at each other in awe? That’s what it’s like watching “Broly” every minute from the moment the fight begins. "Super" gave fans a glimpse of what the animation could be like if animators weren't rushed for time. The Tournament of Power arc is undeniable proof that when production allows animators to work without pressure, the results are outstanding.
