A bank employee in Los Angeles (Alison Lohman) hoping for a fast career advancement denies compassion to an elderly borrower facing financial hardship, choosing instead to make what she believes are the necessary, difficult choices to get ahead of her colleague. This proves to be a serious error, and Justin Long appears as the woman’s boyfriend. “Drag Me to Hell” (2009) signaled Sam Raimi's return to the style of exaggerated horror he had previously explored in his “Evil Dead” films, following his success with the "Spider-Man" movies. Although it contains disturbing elements related to a malevolent supernatural force, it’s better than the initial two installments of the “Evil Dead” series (I am unfamiliar with “Army of Darkness”). One reviewer dismissed the film as lacking substance, but regardless of whether audiences connect with what it presents, there is indeed a discernible message woven into its over-the-top, comic book-inspired action. It’s quite obvious at first glance and has some intriguing layers if you examine it more closely. Lohman is appealing in her portrayal of a young woman while Bojana Novakovic appears briefly but memorably as the older woman's granddaughter. The film’s length is 1 hour, 39 minutes, and filming took place in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. GRADE: B+
