It's not unexpected that the critics at Rotten Tomatoes didn’t handle this film well. Their opinions often differ from mine and those of most viewers, as evidenced by their 23% rating compared to the audience score of 60%. A number of people who consider themselves traditionalists also seem to dislike it. However, given its title, Dracula Untold, it shouldn't be a shock that the story is a fresh take on the legend. I personally found this movie quite enjoyable. It’s true that it isn’t the classic Dracula tale, but it doesn't deviate too much from the original background and is a pretty good story, unlike some of the terrible Hollywood re-imaginings. The traditional account states that Dracula became a vampire during his battles with the Turks, and this movie explores how that occurred. Differing from most—if not all—Dracula films, Dracula isn’t really portrayed as the villain but rather the opposite; it's a story about sacrifices and Dracula’s attempt to retain some of his humanity, ethics, and mental stability. As you would expect in a Dracula movie, there is blood, and this one provides that without going overboard. In fact, the actual vampire feeding isn’t emphasized until near the end. There are numerous fight scenes against the Turks (who are the true antagonists here), with plenty of blood and dismembered body parts scattered around. The special effects were well done, and I especially appreciated the swarms of bats that Dracula controlled during the final battles against the Turks. Luke Evans’ portrayal of the prince who becomes Dracula was quite good. The other actors also did a solid job. It's unlikely any of them will receive Oscar nominations for their roles in this film, but I don't have any complaints about their performances. Overall, I found this movie to be enjoyable and strongly disagree with those criticizing it. I also appreciated the final few scenes set in modern times at the end, which hinted at a possible sequel—something I’d like to see.
