Wuchak on Dracula: Dead and Loving It

6/10 · Mar 21, 2023

This movie, “Dracula: Dead and Loving It,” released in 1995, is a humorous imitation of the Dracula narrative, sharing a similar comedic tone and lightheartedness with films like "Young Frankenstein" from 1974 and "Spaceballs" in 1987. Differing from "Love at First Bite," which starred George Hamilton, this one doesn’t have a contemporary setting; instead, it's largely a playful retelling of the initial portion of “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992), incorporating elements from other versions of the story as well. Leslie Nielsen in the lead role inevitably brings to mind "The Naked Gun" series. Steven Weber does a good job playing Harker, and Peter MacNicol really leans into his performance as Renfield. Amy Yasbeck’s appearance is reminiscent of Brooks' earlier film, “Robin Hood: Men in Tights.” She, along with Lysette Anthony who stands out among the female characters as Lucy, are both enjoyable to watch—though I wish her role had been more substantial (but it’s a decent size, I suppose). The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes and was filmed at Culver Studios in Culver City, located southeast of Hollywood. GRADE: B-
