This film is simply misguided. Hammer Horror Films were undergoing significant changes in 1972, so they tried something new—a risky but ultimately unsuccessful effort to connect with a different audience—by bringing back Count Dracula. The movie begins with an energetic opening sequence set in 1872, showing Dracula (Christopher Lee) and Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) engaged in a final struggle. We see Dracula’s remains buried near Helsing's grave, then the story jumps ahead to 1972... The concept—releasing one of cinema’s most famous monsters into modern-day London—probably seemed promising, but it just doesn’t work; there’s no real sense of dread and it feels like an imitation of what came before. Aside from a pretty good initial scene reviving the character, the film is too strange and silly to be genuinely frightening; it's more comical than scary. Several other issues prevent any enjoyment, even as a kind of spoof. Dracula spends most of his time in one place (again!), so he doesn’t actually cause chaos in contemporary London like you’d expect, and the 1972 young people who are central to the story feel dated themselves! This is made worse by the truly awful musical score, which should have been locked away years earlier. Some of Hammer's familiar elements try to break through, but they can’t overcome the weak writing and cartoonish directing style. It does have its supporters, and looking back now after many years, it’s possible to appreciate it with a little affection, but it’s still not a good film and marks the beginning of a sad time for a once-great studio. 4/10
