Following the deaths of an MI6 director and his assistant in Jamaica, agent 007, portrayed by Sean Connery, is dispatched to look into what happened. He joins forces with a local boatman (John Kitzmiller) as they concentrate their attention on a nearby island belonging to a questionable German-Chinese businessman (Joseph Wiseman). Jack Lord appears as a CIA operative and Ursula Andress plays the part of a pearl diver. Adapted from Ian Fleming’s 1958 book, “Dr. No” (released in 1962) launched what became an ongoing James Bond series, and it includes familiar elements: the recognizable James Bond theme music, the initial gun barrel shot, a sophisticated leading character, attractive women, high-end casino gambling, exciting locations, spy tools, action sequences, cocktails prepared “shaken, not stirred,” and a villain with grand ambitions. Although this film doesn’t have the over-the-top gadgets or intense action found in some of the later movies, Bond's fairly ordinary but increasingly risky inquiry on Jamaica becomes engaging as it leads to the hidden base of the character at the center of the story. It isn’t surprising that it was popular and ignited a fascination with spies during the 1960s. Andress is memorable among the female characters, though Eunice Gayson as Sylvia Trench and Zena Marshall as Miss Taro are also lovely in their own right. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 49 minutes and was filmed on location in Jamaica, along with Pinewood Studios & London, England. GRADE: A-
