John Chard on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

8/10 · Oct 15, 2015

I feel completely detached from humanity. I’m utterly devoid of feeling. It's like I exist without a spirit! It stands among the most recognizable works in literature, a brilliant narrative crafted by Robert Louis Stevenson. The fact that it has repeatedly inspired film and stage productions, and continues to do so since its publication in 1866, demonstrates how cleverly constructed it is. This 1931 adaptation, helmed by Rouben Mamoulian and featuring Fredric March, might not adhere perfectly to the original story, but it’s possibly the best version ever made for film, thanks largely to a remarkable performance from March and the innovative techniques employed by Mamoulian and his crew. It possesses a striking visual flair, and because it was created before the Hays Code, it's alluring and risky, filled with disturbing brutality, and its unsettling psychological elements contribute to its status as a Gothic horror masterpiece. The exploration of divided personalities, the shattering of restraints—Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is truly invaluable. 8/10
