It’s remarkable how focused people have been on scale! Dr. Cyclops comes from Ernest B. Schoedsack, with a script by Tom Kilpatrick. The cast includes Albert Dekker, Thomas Coley, Janice Logan, Charles Halton and Victor Kilian. Music is arranged by Ernst Toch, Gerard Corbanara and Albert Hay Malotte, and Henry Sharp handled the cinematography. A team of scientists are invited to Dr. Alexander Thorkel’s (Dekker) isolated lab deep within the Peruvian jungle. They discover he's experiencing vision loss while pursuing a mysterious project. It doesn't take long for them to regret their decision about staying to uncover his plans. Among the “mad scientist” movies from that earlier period of science fiction, Dr. Cyclops is quite good, featuring impressive special effects, vibrant Technicolor and an outstanding performance by Dekker. Like many films of its kind, the scientific concepts are outlandish—in this case, miniaturization. Thorkel’s relentless experimentation creates peril for his “guests” as they find themselves in a tiny world filled with everyday hazards. It doesn't quite reach horror status; the upbeat musical score accompanying the "little people’s" struggles to survive has surprised and let down some viewers. The film intends for you to have fun while also appreciating the skill involved given the time it was made. There aren’t any deep philosophical ideas or symbolic meanings, and outside of Dekker's work, the acting isn't particularly strong. However, if you allow yourself to get caught up in this crazy science fiction story, a good time is practically guaranteed. 7.5/10
