_**A playful send-up of classic romantic comedies starring Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor**_ In 1962, a writer from Maine who penned an unconventional guide for women (played by Renée Zellweger) goes to New York City with the goal of getting her book published. There, she finds herself targeted by a well-known journalist (Ewan McGregor), who intends to demonstrate that she’s not as progressive as she seems and is, in reality, quite traditional. Sarah Paulson and David Hyde Pierce portray the characters' closest friends, while Tony Randall appears in a smaller role. “Down With Love” (2003) is designed to mock those romantic comedies from the late 1950s and early 1960s that often centered on conflicts between men and women. Although I haven’t actually watched any of those original films, this movie provides a funny and charming parody. Zellweger is quite endearing, and McGregor does well in an unusual part for him. The presence of Jeri Ryan & Melissa George as female characters adds to the enjoyment. However, the film feels slightly overextended for what it is; trimming about 12 to 15 minutes would have improved its pace—that’s just my opinion on the matter. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 41 minutes and was filmed at Universal Studios, Universal City, and Hollywood Center Studios in Hollywood, California. GRADE: B-
