A young woman struggling with emotional issues finds herself enrolled at Blackwood Boarding School in Upstate New York. There, alongside a few other girls considered challenging, she’s guided by an enigmatic headmistress and her team toward becoming contributing members of society. It isn't long before the students realize something unsettling is happening. Adapted from Lois Duncan’s 1974 novel, "Down a Dark Hall" (2018) delivers a visually appealing Gothic mystery with shades of earlier films like "The House That Screamed." Viewers who enjoy that classic and subsequent works such as "Lust for a Vampire," "Picnic at Hanging Rock," "Suspiria," “The Woods,” and “The Moth Diaries,” will likely find something to appreciate here, along with echoes of the 2005 remake of “The Fog.” The initial portion of the film, lasting roughly fifty minutes, feels slow-paced but serves as groundwork for a more engaging final section. AnnaSophia is believable in her role and it’s pleasant to see Uma again. The movie has a running time of one hour and thirty-six minutes and was filmed in late 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, on the northeastern coast, as well as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, which are also part of Spain.
