Tom Powers’s marriage to the detached and calculating Phyllis, portrayed by Barbara Stanwyck, proves to be problematic when she begins an affair with his charming insurance salesman, Walter, played by Fred MacMurray. They devise a scheme to get rid of him and collect on his life insurance policy, and Walter discovers how they can increase the amount received. Shortly after the man’s body is discovered near train tracks, and initially ruled as accidental, the money arrives. Things appear successful until a coworker, Keyes, brought to life by Edward G. Robinson, suspects something isn't right and begins investigating. I have always thought Barbara Stanwyck didn’t get enough recognition for her talent - she excels in this film, and so does Robinson, who delivers an understated performance. Even MacMurray, typically not memorable, gives a solid portrayal; Billy Wilder’s direction, along with striking visuals and sharp dialogue, weaves together this intelligent and unsettling story. The consistently excellent score by Miklós Rósza complements the rising suspense as the film progresses to a conclusion that maintains viewer engagement until the very last moment. It's a truly wonderful movie.
