_Double Indemnity_, released in 1944, is possibly the finest film noir ever made, featuring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson. The story comes from a novel by James Cain, and the script was written together by Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler. The narrative unfolds in California during 1938 and draws inspiration from an actual event: the 1927 murder of a married woman’s husband in Queens, New York. In that case, the woman's boyfriend killed him after she arranged for a substantial insurance policy with a double-indemnity provision. Within the film, Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck) secures a life insurance policy on her spouse with the assistance of Walter Neff (MacMurray), an insurance salesman who quickly finds himself involved in something far more dangerous. Edward G. Robinson portrays Barton Keyes, Neff's colleague and a claims adjuster who grows increasingly wary of Phyllis Dietrichson’s possible involvement in her husband's demise. _Double Indemnity_ is ninety-seven minutes that exemplifies what makes movies great.
