This Drew Barrymore movie combines elements of a mystery, romantic comedy, and slasher film. Following a murder in New York City, a young woman—played by Barrymore—relocates to Los Angeles, where she finds herself sharing a living space with an aspiring writer (George Newbern). However, it appears her dangerous other self has come along as well. "Doppelganger," released in 1993, presents a diverting narrative alongside a captivating puzzle: Is Holly truly being haunted by a sinister double, or is she suffering from multiple personalities? Or could there be another explanation entirely? Barrymore was quite charming when the film was made, reminiscent of her role in “Poison Ivy” the year before. The ending, however, feels improbable—like something out of "Scooby-Doo"—and then descends into the bizarre, akin to “Hellraiser.” It’s clear that writer/director Avi Nesher set out to surprise audiences with an unexpected turn. Despite being perplexing, I think the explanations offered do logically connect: the mistreatment and exploitation of someone ultimately led to what we witness onscreen. A noteworthy detail: Drew Barrymore's mother, Jaid Barrymore, portrays the initial victim. The movie’s length is 1 hour and 44 minutes; filming took place in Los Angeles—including Old Anoakia Mansion in Arcadia—and Manhattan for the introductory scenes. GRADE: B-
