A lawyer who suffered disfigurement in an accident and succumbed to grief now seems to linger within a deserted mental institution in northern New Jersey. While local teenagers dismiss the stories as mere folklore, eight of them are about to discover otherwise. “Doom Asylum” (1987) delivers a fast-paced horror comedy experience characterized by exaggerated performances and broad humor, but it’s enjoyable if you accept it for what it is: a diverting bit of low-budget cinema made on a budget of just $90,000. The most memorable aspect might be the setting itself—the former Essex Mountain Sanatorium—which really suits the film's style.
