It’s easy to picture how this movie came about: a group of screenwriters after lunch, drawing comparisons to films like "Stepford Wives" and “The Truman Show,” deciding to mash them together while leaving out what made those originals good, and casting attractive actors to ensure financial success. While the filmmakers may have achieved that goal, the result is a visually striking but ultimately aimless story. Florence Pugh does her best as Alice, Jack’s increasingly unsettled wife. They reside in a seemingly perfect desert town where men work for Frank while women handle typical domestic duties. The tranquility shatters when Alice observes a neighbor, Margaret, who suspects something isn't right with their manufactured paradise. A sudden and disturbing event triggers nightmares for Alice, threatening her marriage and Jack’s professional future. Chris Pine is convincingly deceptive as Frank, but Harry Styles doesn’t get much opportunity to show if he can act or merely looks good in expensive clothes, like Daniel Craig does. That's the core issue here: the film boasts a polished appearance, yet the story itself feels incomplete. The final scenes featuring men in red clothing felt reminiscent of a Vodaphone advertisement, and at over two hours, I found myself completely disengaged. Styles’ appearance will undoubtedly open doors for him, and collaborating with actors like Pugh and Pine is beneficial, but unless his team focuses on better scripts and more developed characters, he risks becoming a less-distinct version of Zac Efron. It seems destined for television someday.
