"John" (Donald Sutherland) and his wife, "Laura" (Julie Christie), find themselves in Venice, where they meet two older women—"Heather" (Hilary Manson) and "Wendy" (Clelia Matania). One of these mysterious sisters asserts that she can perceive the ghost of their daughter who recently passed away. While "Laura" is betrothed, "John" seems less certain about his future, but as events unfold, it becomes clear that the drowned girl has left a legacy of problems for both parents to confront—some more significant than others! Sutherland gives a strong performance; his character possesses considerable depth, revealing that he hasn't fully processed his loss and grief. Christie is also effective, portraying a different approach to coping with stress, and the story explores their individual needs and desires for resolution. As the central mystery grows, the ghostly appearances seem increasingly genuine—but it’s difficult to discern what is truly real versus imagined. Director Nicholas Roeg has put effort into creating an unsettling atmosphere. The film avoids elaborate special effects, but the repurposed chapel where "John" works proves effective, as does a powerful score by Pino Donaggio, contributing to a pervasive feeling of… discomfort! There's also a love scene—remarkably daring for its time—shot in a more explicit (though still stylized) manner that demonstrates the couple’s continued intimacy despite their shared trauma. The film occasionally moves slowly, but it remains an unusual and thought-provoking work that defies easy categorization. It functions as both a thriller and a horror movie, with well-developed characters offering ample substance for viewers to engage with. Venice itself is beautifully presented!
