Around halfway through the second act, I began to lose interest in the story and struggled to understand what was happening. My overall impression after watching was that the narrative never truly gained momentum and felt weighed down by confusing ambiguities, even though it contained some intriguing aspects. I developed a theory to explain what occurred (detailed below), but upon further thought, I realized that not all of the pieces fit together. The movie simply wasn't entertaining enough to warrant more effort in trying to decipher it. I would have rated it around 5/10 initially, but after researching its official meaning and alternative interpretations, I’ve come to believe it possesses a degree of genius. It really needed a more compelling story with more engaging characters. The film has a running time of 113 minutes; the Director's Cut is 20 minutes longer. Other popular explanations include the "Schizophrenia Theory," suggesting the film depicts the protagonist experiencing an episode of mental illness, and the “Dream Theory,” which posits that it was all just a dream—a notion I found too predictable and simplistic. The official explanation is quite complex and science-fiction oriented: The Tangent Universe Theory. This theory proposes that time in our reality occasionally becomes corrupted, creating an unstable alternate universe destined to collapse after a few weeks but threatening the destruction of everything. The events depicted are part of this alternative reality where forces attempt to correct the error and return to normal using elements like a jet engine (the Artifact), Jake Gyllenhaal as the Living Receiver, the rabbit figure (a Manipulated Dead person), and more. A search online will reveal how the Tangent Universe explanation resolves many of the film’s unanswered questions.
