I’ve often thought Disney’s efforts at teaching films were too basic and depended on boring narration, but choosing "Donald" as our guide through practical math applications feels like one of their better ideas. A series of well-made animations show how square roots, angles, percentages, and graphs are essential to things like constructing buildings, piloting aircraft, and even playing a lute. They even try to explain infinity! The film doesn’t just focus on numbers and shapes; it also incorporates some history—any reason to put on costumes—and some playful moments, making the presentation both interesting and captivating. It's fascinating to consider how people made the discoveries that support so much of our social, musical, and scientific progress in ancient times when there was no electricity. Was it chance? Planning? Maybe a bit of both? The inquisitive "Donald" finds some answers to those questions, and the film moves along entertainingly for about thirty minutes—a length that perhaps should still be shown in schools to make a subject less intimidating for students, myself included.
