CinemaSerf on Don Juan DeMarco

It’s hard not to notice a resemblance between Donald Trump’s public persona and Marlon Brando in this film. The movie centers on veteran psychiatrist "Mickler," played by Brando, who is looking forward to retirement and a peaceful life alongside his wife, "Marilyn" (Faye Dunaway). His plans are disrupted when he's asked to assess a young man attempting suicide. The case seems simple enough at first, but the patient insists he’s the famous “Don Juan.” Curious, "Mickler" chooses to get acquainted with this young man (Johnny Depp) and evaluate him without resorting to medication. In a manner reminiscent of Cervantes, “Don Juan” shares elaborate stories of his romantic adventures and general zest for life with the doctor and most of the hospital staff. Through these tales, the patient also subtly points out how "Mickler’s" own marriage has grown stale, suggesting that these narratives might be having a positive impact on the psychiatrist more than the patient himself. Meanwhile, conflicting information surfaces regarding “Don Juan's” true identity—is he genuinely who he claims to be? The film offers moments of amusement, but they are infrequent and the format of therapy sessions begins to feel monotonous and repetitive. Depp delivers a charming performance, however Brando seems unengaged, and opportunities for humor are scarce. It’s an acceptable movie to watch, yet it ultimately lacks any real energy.
