Reno on Don Juan DeMarco

7/10 · Dec 24, 2016

This early work for Johnny Depp offers unexpected elements. The movie deals with mature themes but avoids excessive sexuality, making it suitable for family viewing. It’s not precisely about Don Juan; instead, it resembles "The Fall," where flashbacks unveil everything while maintaining an air of mystery. The narrative centers on a man who claims to be the genuine Don Juan DeMarco, celebrated as the world's greatest lover. Following a suicide attempt, he finds himself in a psychiatric facility for treatment. A doctor nearing retirement takes on his case, and as DeMarco recounts his life story, the doctor is also spurred to revive his own romantic pursuits. The rest of the film details their efforts to resolve the situation. While not a cinematic triumph, it's an engaging drama, especially noteworthy for its well-developed characters and cleverly constructed plot, culminating in a hopeful message about the value of love and being loved. Choosing this movie wouldn’t be regrettable, as the theme revolves around love, even when the person you seek is absent—essentially, it functions as a metaphor regarding the true Don Juan versus the one portrayed here, similar to how people believe in God's omnipresence, so too does love and the essence of Don Juan reside within everyone. Johnny Depp delivers an excellent performance, perfectly embodying the central character. Marlon Brando is also superb, exhibiting greatness through simplicity. The supporting cast is adequate, but the film primarily focuses on these two actors. Although it’s been almost 25 years since its release, a remake could be worthwhile with script revisions. Contemporary writers and directors possess the skill to accomplish this, but such a project would require substantial backing and prominent figures. Perhaps Johnny Depp himself could portray the doctor in a modern adaptation. Until then, this remains a film worth experiencing. 7/10
