It strikes me now that my rating might be generous, but something I saw—a line delivered by Jean-Louis Trintignant—really gets at why I feel this way about the film. He said, essentially (and I’m paraphrasing), “I can’t remember the movie, but I do recall how it made me feel,” and that captures it pretty well. It's based on an intriguing concept and features strong performances from talented actors; some people don’t care for Marlon Brando’s part in this, but I personally don’t find it to be so terrible. The main issue is that the movie seems unsure of its direction following a promising beginning.
