It’s often overlooked when discussing the most well-regarded Stephen King movie adaptations from the initial two decades, but this film possesses a remarkable subtlety and depth, representing one of King's more sophisticated pieces. Kathy Bates somehow managed to surpass her already impressive Oscar-winning performance in 'Misery,' delivering an exceptional portrayal. I’m a big admirer of John C. Reilly, Eric Bogosian (whose roles in 'Talk Radio' and 'Under Siege 2' are personal favorites of Oliver Stone and Steven Seagal respectively), David Strathairn, Christopher Plummer, and particularly Jennifer Jason Leigh; the script by Tony Gilroy provides them with excellent material to work with. I often make light of director Taylor Hackford’s contributions, but it's possible he embodies a modern equivalent of versatile directors from earlier eras like Norman Jewison and Robert Wise. That’s quite high praise—and in this instance, he rises to the occasion admirably, producing some of his finest work.
