A spooky horror movie manages to stay unsettling even with some performances that lean into comedy. It’s characteristic of Stuart Gordon's work, in a way. The story explores the significance of youthful imagination, similar to other films, but it does so through a kind of warning narrative involving rough justice. The dolls are genuinely disturbing, and the mansion where the film takes place is also quite eerie; the music complements everything well. The overall feeling is generally very effective. I particularly appreciated how the opening credits established the mood. It's a really neat movie.
