A couple (played by Christos Stergioglou and Michele Valley) maintain an unusual degree of protectiveness toward their children, isolating them within a secluded home and limiting contact with the outside world. The only exception to this is "Christina" (Anna Kalaitzidou), who occasionally visits as a paid companion for their son (Christos Passalis). While the father goes off to work daily, the rest of the family lives in an unsettlingly peculiar way, where even language itself takes on altered meanings; apparently, a zombie is actually just a buttercup. The situation escalates when Christina develops a connection with their youngest daughter (Mary Tsoni), and the established patterns of control and fear begin to weaken. The children, now young adults, start to doubt the truthfulness of what they’ve been told and yearn for new experiences and independence. However, the parents are unwilling to allow this shift, which prompts extreme measures from the father and an even more elaborate scheme concocted by their daughter as a means of escaping their restrictive environment. Yorgos Lanthimos directs the narrative with a strangely compelling approach, blending a sense of blissful unawareness with the acceptance of a life they’ve never questioned. The acting, particularly from Stergioglou portraying the occasionally harsh father and Kalaitzidou in her role as the visitor, generates considerable unease; furthermore, the son's behavior—acting as if he were much younger—is quite disturbing to witness. One wonders if such a situation could really occur.
