I picked up this DVD some time back, thinking it would be something serious like The DaVinci Code. Instead, it's a comedy—or at least, close to being a farce. As someone who doesn't believe in God, I don't mind making fun of religious institutions, but the amount of irreverence might push some people’s buttons. I noticed a few gaps in the story that were pretty obvious, though they weren’t really dealbreakers given the kind of movie it is. It seems like they intentionally cast George Carlin, who’s known for his comedy and lack of faith, as a prominent religious leader—a bishop or something similar—as if to acknowledge how strange that casting choice was. It felt like things took a while to come together, though maybe I just wasn't following along properly. There were some genuinely funny moments and the script is good in spots. Alan Rickman seemed to be enjoying himself, which made it enjoyable when he appeared. Overall, it was mostly entertaining, but I got rid of the DVD, so that says something.
