After a medical procedure that seems lifted from the story of “Dr Jekyll,” a police officer and his canine companion have become a single, powerful team dedicated to catching "Petey," the striped cat and criminal genius. Despite repeated arrests, he continually evades capture—much to the frustration of both the police chief and the mayor! His newest plan involves cloning, but the result is an unexpectedly meek, possibly even well-meaning, smaller version of himself who simply desires to be his son. This “Lil’ Petey” gets left behind, only to be taken in by the gentle “Dog Man.” Following a bonding experience, they embark on a somewhat sentimental journey of detective work as nearly everyone develops affection for the tiny kitten with a golden heart. It's genuinely enjoyable, and there’s a lot happening that will appeal to adults alongside the younger viewers. The writing shows some care, and themes of family, faithfulness, optimism, and the possibility of redemption are conveyed clearly without being overly sweet. The animation is pleasing enough and blends science fiction with moments designed to pull at your emotions in a friendly way. You probably won’t recall it later, and at ninety minutes, it feels a bit drawn out, but it's an accessible, bright, and lively film to watch.
