Wuchak on Dog Eat Dog

Paul Schrader’s 2016 film “Dog Eat Dog” follows a group of former criminals (Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe & Christopher Matthew Cook) who are hired to kidnap a baby—the offspring of another gangster—in the Cleveland area. Schrader's work frequently explores themes of Christianity and sexuality, as seen in films like "Hardcore," “Cat People,” and “Auto Focus.” Expect similar elements here, but with an added layer of dark humor blended into the urban crime story and its more explicit content. The film is rough around the edges—brutal, humorous, and strange—but it has a spiritual undercurrent running through it. It brings to mind 90’s crime thrillers such as “Pulp Fiction,” “Mojave Moon” and “The Way of the Gun.” While not quite reaching the heights of "Pulp," it's more engaging than the other two examples. Given Schrader’s style, I have a feeling there’s probably more to this movie than is initially apparent, and my assessment might change after watching it again. Or maybe it’s just trying too hard to be cool and different. It’s up to you to decide. The film has a running time of 1 hour & 33 minutes and was filmed in Northeast Ohio (Cleveland & Sheffield Lake) as well as Tampa, Florida (for restaurant scenes, street views, and nighttime cityscapes). Edward Bunker adapted the script from Matthew Wilder's novel. GRADE: B-
