The film’s name isn't particularly helpful; it suggests something entirely different than what unfolds onscreen. Walter Huston gives an excellent performance as "Sam," portraying a wealthy car manufacturer who decides to travel through Europe with his wife, “Fran” (Ruth Chatterton), after selling his business. Even during the early scenes on their ship, where she encounters the charming David Niven ("Capt. Lockert"), it becomes apparent that their marriage, despite appearing affectionate, is fragile. Things become even more obvious when they arrive in Paris and she meets Paul Lukas (“Iselin”), and "Sam" finds himself working hard to prevent his wife, whom he deeply cares for, from seeking a divorce. The narrative develops gradually; however, it remains engaging throughout. The connection between the two leads is portrayed with sensitivity and authenticity; she embodies a younger woman searching for fulfillment and financial security, while he represents a man desiring a return to family life and stability. There are some subtle developments in the plot and I felt the resolution was ultimately satisfying. The story has successfully adapted from its stage origins; William Wyler avoided many of the stiffnesses that often accompany adaptations of theatrical works, and Maria Ouspenskaya delivers a brief but memorable appearance near the conclusion that introduces an unwelcome element into the proceedings.
