A man who prefers tea to alcohol (Terence Hill, also known as Mario Girotti) arrives in Holy Sand, New Mexico, while pursuing some bandits, creating a stir among local troublemakers like Alessio Di Clemente. He finds himself befriended by the Sheriff, portrayed by Paul Sorvino, desired romantically by a woman named Clare Carey, and generally earns the respect of the townspeople. “Doc West” initially aired on television in 2009 and was accompanied by a sequel, “Triggerman,” released that same year. These films signified Terence Hill’s return to Westerns after a fifteen-year absence. He possesses a classic movie star appearance and gained recognition for his roles in Spaghetti Westerns from the 1960s and 70s, including titles such as “God Forgives… I don’t” (1967), “Django, Prepare a Coffin” (1968), “Boot Hill” (1969), and the Trinity series. One might consider him similar to Clint Eastwood, though he never achieved Eastwood's level of recognition or influence. In his earlier Westerns, his voice was dubbed due to his accent; however, viewers can now hear his natural speaking voice. As a television production, “Doc West” doesn’t have the same technical polish as Sergio Leone’s “My Name is Nobody” (1973), and it includes some noticeable cartoonish computer-generated imagery—like the snake and fire effects—but it remains enjoyable to watch, featuring an impressive Western town set and beautiful Southwestern landscapes. The plot itself is decent but could have been improved with some revisions. What truly stands out are the appealing characters and the overall positive feeling of the film. Sorvino’s portrayal of the Sheriff essentially fills a role similar to Bud Spencer's as Terence Hill’s strong, dependable companion. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 37 minutes and was filmed at Bonanza Creek in Santa Fe, New Mexico. GRADE: B-
