The movie “Mandingo” and “D’Artagnan,” along with depictions of slavery, are all elements that come together in a powerful way. The director’s approach—showing the harsh reality of discrimination against African Americans directly, then providing a sense of release at the end—is remarkable. What begins with an impactful musical theme quickly transitions into relentless scenes of brutality, offering a disturbing look at American history. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a truly awful portrayal and Christoph Waltz is excellent in his role, but it’s Quentin Tarantino's writing that really stands out; he intentionally combines retribution with racial prejudice, ultimately prompting viewers to scorn those who oppressed enslaved people. It’s hard to argue against the idea that this film rivals “Pulp Fiction” as Quentin’s finest work.
