I was definitely entertained by Django Unchained; its gripping plot and surprising turns kept me engaged. However, it didn't quite reach the heights of my most beloved Tarantino films. The characteristic bursts of violence are there, occasionally feeling exaggerated to the point of being almost comical. It would have been simple to fall back on clichés with the characters, but thankfully the writing managed to steer clear of that trap. The DiCaprio character, who is a slave owner, displays considerable cruelty, yet he also shows moments where he questions the established order regarding his slaves. Interestingly, one of his older enslaved people seems to wield more authority than the owner himself. A connection forms between the two main characters as they collaborate on bounty hunting jobs, which I found quite rewarding to witness. There are the familiar, often understated references to other films sprinkled throughout, and I detected hints of influence from Spaghetti Westerns here and there. I did enjoy the movie, even though it’s not one I'll likely revisit repeatedly like some of his other work. If you can tolerate depictions of intense violence and historical racism, it might be worth checking out.
